compliment or complement? These two words are easily confused. An expression of admiration is a compliment: My compliments to the chef; The remark was intended as a compliment. A complement is an accompaniment to something that sets off its good qualities (Wine is the perfect complement to a good meal), the full number of something (The baby had the usual complement of arms and legs), or a word or expression that completes a predicate. The verbs compliment and complement work in the same way: May I compliment you on your cooking?; Their characters may be different, but they complement each other well. See also note at complement¹
