Designating, belonging to, or involving either of a pair of very large reticulospinal neurons found in bony fishes and many amphibians, which have the cell body in the medulla oblongata and the axon (nerve fibre) extending the length of the spinal cord, and which are involved especially in fast escape responses. OriginLate 19th century; earliest use found in Journal of Comparative Neurology. From the name of Ludwig Mauthner, Austrian ophthalmologist and neuroanatomist, who described the nerve fibres in 1859. |
