From the name of the French Benedictine Congregation of St-Maur, founded in 1618 (from the name of St Maur, French form of the name of St Maurus (d. 584), a Roman disciple of St Benedict, and founder of the abbey of Glanfeuil (afterwards St-Maur-sur-Loire), adopted as patron of the congregation) + -ist.
