Any of several New Zealand evergreen shrubs or small trees of the genera Pittosporum (family Pittosporaceae) and Myrsine (family Myrsinaceae); especially (more fully black matipo) P. tenuifolium, with black bark and clusters of dark purple flowers, and (more fully red matipo) M. australis, with dark red bark.

Origin

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Joseph Hooker (1817–1911), botanist. From Maori matipou the red matipo.
