A boreal plant, Hedysarum alpinum (family Fabaceae(Leguminosae)), whose sweetish root, which has a taste reminiscent of liquorice, is eaten as a vegetable by the Inuit of Alaska.

Early 20th century. From Inupiaq masu (in the Kobuk River area masru).
