From the name of Caleb Pratt, U.S. architect, who first patented this type of bridge construction with his son Thomas Pratt in 1844. Pratt2/prat/noun Attributive Of, relating to, or designating a type of cream-coloured earthenware (or items made of it) decorated typically in drab blue and green, brown, ochre, yellow, and orange, and produced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by members of the Pratt family, or by other potters using this style.
Origin1920s. From Pratt, the name of the family of Staffordshire potters who were originally responsible for the manufacture of this kind of earthenware. |
