Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Dana (1849–1935), mineralogist and physicist. From German Maskelynit from the name of Mervyn Herbert Nevil Story-Maskelyne, English mineralogist, who made several studies of the composition of meteorites + -it.
