释义 | Marshall Islands/ˈmɑːʃl ˌʌɪləndz /(also the Marshalls) A country consisting of two chains of islands in the NW Pacific; population 64,500 (est. 2009); languages, English (official), local Austronesian languages; capital, Majuro. The islands were made a German protectorate in 1885. After being under Japanese mandate following the First World War they were administered by the US as part of the Pacific Islands Trust Territory from 1947 until 1986, when they became a republic in free association with the US OriginNamed after John Marshall, an English adventurer who visited the islands in 1788. |
