A member of a nomadic trading people of Afghanistan.
adjective
Of, relating to, or designating this people.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Herbert Benjamin Edwardes (1819–1868), army and political officer in India. From Pashto Powandá, lit. ‘grazier, herdsman’, further etymology uncertain; perhaps from powəl to tend (nomadic cattle) or from Kabuli Persian poyanda running, going, influenced by the Pashto verb.
