Mid 18th century; earliest use found in New & Complete Dictionary Arts & Science. From post-classical Latin Marchantia from the name of J. Marchant's father Nicolas Marchant (d. 1678), the first botanist to be admitted to membership of the Academy of Sciences of Paris in 1666 + -ia.
