A name given to an 18th- or 19th-century Irish dish ring, a hoop of silver often elaborately chased or decorated with pierced and repoussé work, and used as a stand for a circular bowl or the like.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Blackwood's Magazine. From potato + ring. The name was apparently given to the rings long after the period of their manufacture, on the (almost certainly unfounded) assumption that they were used specifically either to support a bowl containing potatoes or even to hold together a pile of potatoes.
