Late 19th century; earliest use found in Austin Flint (1812–1886). Perhaps from Hellenistic Greek μαραντικός wasting away from ancient Greek μαραν-, aorist stem of μαραίνειν to wither, waste away + -τικός, suffix forming adjectives from verbs.
