Origin
Early 17th century; earliest use found in Bible (King James). From Hebrew māneh a weight used to measure precious metals and other commodities, roughly equivalent to 500 grams; compare biblical Aramaic mĕnē, Syriac manyā, Ugaritic mn, and Akkadian manū; also Arabic mann. The ancient Greek μνᾶ is a loanword from Semitic.
