1An ornamental trimming round the lower part of a sleeve. Also: a ruffle (of hair, etc.) of similar appearance. Now chiefly historical.
2 Cell Biol. A sheath of microtubules which surrounds and extends tailwards from the nucleus of developing spermatids.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Court Magazine. From French manchette double cuff, oversleeve from manche sleeve + -ette.
