A member of a North American Indian people formerly inhabiting the valley of the upper Rappahanoock River in northern Virginia and perhaps speaking a Siouan language.
Origin
Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Smith (bap. 1580, d. 1631), soldier and colonial governor. From Virginia Algonquian, with -ac, plural suffix.
