Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From Brazilian Portuguese manacá from Tupi mana'ká. The word is attested in use in Brazil (as manaca) by G. Marggraf Historiae Rerum Naturalium Brasiliae 69.
