Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin maltha, malta mixture of pitch or lime with fat or wax (also applied to a kind of natural bitumen) from ancient Greek μάλθα, μάλθη mixture of wax and pitch, perhaps from μαλθακός.
