A Japanese scroll containing a narrative, usually in pictures and with explanatory writing, designed to be examined progressively from right to left as it is unrolled.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Isabella Bird (1831–1904), traveller. From Japanese makimono handscroll that is unrolled on a flat surface for reading from maki-, combining stem of maku to roll (up) + mono thing. The variant makemono has no parallel in Japanese; it is perhaps influenced by kakemono. Compare French makimono, makemono.
