An amorphous alkaloid, C21H25N3O2, obtained from the bark of the Australian tree Alstonia constricta (family Apocynaceae), which produces a red colour on reaction with nitric acid.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Henry Watts (1815–1884), chemist. From ancient Greek πορϕύρα purple + -ine, after German Porphyrin.
