A member of a Pathan people on the north-west frontier of Pakistan, noted historically for their fierce opposition to the British in that region.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Green Balfour (1813–1889), surgeon and naturalist. From Persian maḥsūd from Arabic maḥsūd envied, passive participle of ḥasada to envy.
