Late 19th century; earliest use found in The Times. From the name of Pommery & Greno, the firm which produced the champagne from the name of Narcisse Greno, who took over the firm in Rheims in 1836 + the name of Louis Alexandre Pommery, who went into partnership with Greno in 1856.
