2 Entomology. Of an ovariole: having trophocytes or nurse cells enclosed in the follicle with the oocytes.
3 Ecology. Of a lake: rich in nutrients, or a particular category of nutrient.

Mid 17th century (in an earlier sense). From poly- + -trophic. In sense 1 after Hellenistic Greek πολυτρόϕος supplying food, nutritious, highly nourished.
