A member of a semi-nomadic people inhabiting the area around Lake Hammar in south-eastern Iraq; a Marsh Arab.
Origin
Late 18th century; earliest use found in Robert Heron (1764–1807), journalist and author. Apparently from literary Arabic maʿdān (in Iraqi Arabic miʿdān), the name of an Arab tribe.
