A system of typecasting by which a large number of types can be produced simultaneously; a machine used for this.
Origin
Late 19th century. Apparently from French Polymatype the name of a machine for casting multiple types (not dated in dictionaries of French) from poly + ma- (perhaps in either matrice or machine) + type.
