Late 17th century; earliest use found in English Factories in India. From Marathi pāḷegār marauding outlaw, poligar from Marathi pāḷẽ confined valley + Persian -gār agent suffix (goes to Kannada pāḷegāra, pāḷeyagāra, Telugu pāḷegāḍu).
