Originally (in Germany): †a department of a hospital where poor patients are treated free of charge by advanced medical students under the supervision of a professor, either as outpatients in the hospital, or (if they are bedridden) on home visits (obsolete ). Later: a hospital or hospital department (†or a dispensary) where outpatients are treated by specialists.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in The Lancet. From German Poliklinik (1835 or earlier: see note; compare earlier †poliklinische Anstalt, †poliklinisches Institut, post-classical Latin Institutum policlinicum medico-chirurgicum, policlinica, noun, schola policlinica) from ancient Greek πόλις city + German Klinik medical teaching at the bedside of a patient, a hospital by which this is provided.
