The genus of gymnospermous trees and shrubs (the type genus of the family Podocarpaceae), with evergreen, usually linear leaves and a seed surrounded by a fleshy red or purple receptacle, native chiefly to the southern hemisphere; (also podocarpus) a tree or shrub of (or formerly of) the genus Podocarpus, which includes some valuable timber trees.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Loudon (1783–1843), landscape gardener and horticultural writer. From scientific Latin Podocarpus, genus name from podo- + ancient Greek καρπός fruit, with reference to the thickened base (stalk) of the fruit.
