A bird of the genus Podargus (family Podargidae), resembling a large nightjar and found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands; a frogmouth; especially (more fully tawny-shouldered podargus) the tawny frogmouth, P. strigoides.

Origin

Early 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Griffith (1790–1858), naturalist. From scientific Latin Podargus, genus name from ancient Greek πόδαργος swift-footed from ποδ-, πούς foot + ἀργός swift, probably the same word as ἀργός white, shining.
