Of a person, or his or her appearance, behaviour, etc.: disgusting, offensive, unpleasant; worthless or contemptible. Also (chiefly of a woman): sexually promiscuous. 3Of popular music (especially funk): passionate, forceful, and uncompromising in style or performance; having a driving beat or rhythm; extremely funky. Origin1970s; earliest use found in Journal of American Folklore. Probably representing a regional, affected, or colloquial pronunciation of stinky, perhaps influenced by stank, past tense of stink. Perhaps compare also skank and skanky, and perhaps also jank and janky. |
