Any of a group of minerals which occur as tufts of fibrous crystals and consist of sulphides and antimonides of lead and some related species, including jamesonite, zinkenite, berthierite, and (especially) boulangerite.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in James Dana (1813–1895), geologist, zoologist, and teacher. From German Plumosit from classical Latin plūmōsus + German -it, after German Federerz, lit. ‘feather-ore’.
