Robert Burns Woodward

/ (1917–79), American organic chemist. He was the first to synthesize quinine, cholesterol, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12, and with the Polish-born American chemist Roald Hoffmann (b.1937) discovered symmetry-based rules governing the course of rearrangement reactions involving cyclic intermediates. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1965).
