A genus of single-celled cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), many of which may be found as green coatings on tree bark, damp walls, etc.; (also in form pleurococcus) a cyanobacterium of this genus.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in American Naturalist. From scientific Latin Pleurococcus, genus name from pleuro- + coccus, probably so called with reference to the sometimes peripheral position of the chloroplast.
