Late 16th century. From classical Latin plagium kidnapping (2nd cent. a.d.), either from ancient Greek πλάγιος oblique, or from classical Latin plaga net, snare + -ium, neuter of -ius, suffix forming adjectives; compare classical Latin plagium netting of game (1st cent. a.d.).
