Late 19th century; earliest use found in Isaac Funk (1839–1912), publisher and reformer. From scientific Latin Pittosporaceae, family name (J. Lindley Nat. System Bot. (ed. 2, 1836) 31, replacing earlier Pittosporeae (R. Brown, 1814); from Pittosporum + -aceae: see -aceous) + -ous.
