单词 | pitticite |
释义 | pitticite/ˈpɪtɪsʌɪt/Mineralogy noun A secondary iron mineral of variable composition based on amorphous hydrous ferric arsenate, occurring as pale grey, yellowish, or reddish to dark brown crusts or rounded masses, often with a vitreous or greasy lustre; any of the varieties of this. OriginEarly 19th century; earliest use found in Ebenezer Emmons (1799–1863). From German Pittizit, apparently from ancient Greek πίττα pitch + German -it, with insertion of -iz- probably after Cubizit, the mineral apparently being so called on account of the pitch-black colour of its dark variety. |
