2 Embryology. In a bird's egg: a small white spot in the centre of the yolk, associated with the germinal disc.
Origin
Early 17th century. From classical Latin latebra hiding place, hidden place, recess from latēre to be hidden + -bra, feminine form corresponding to -brum, suffix forming instrumental nouns.
