Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Thomas Moore (1821–1887), gardener and writer on horticulture. From scientific Latin Pinaceae, family name (J. Lindley Nat. System Bot. (ed. 2, 1836) 313; from Pinus, genus name (from classical Latin pīnus) + -aceae: see -aceous) + -ous.
