Now rare (English regional (northern ) in later use)
noun
A pillow, a cushion. In later use also: a pillowcase.
Origin
Old English; earliest use found in Glosses to Colloquies of Aelfric Bata. Apparently from pillow + the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic ver, Old Swedish var (Swedish var), Danish vaar, all in sense ‘case, cover’ from the same Germanic base as wear.
