A ruffed pheasant, Chrysolophus amherstiae, native to parts of China and Burma (Myanmar) and introduced to Britain, the male of which has predominantly greenish-black and white plumage with bright yellow and red on the lower back and a very long barred tail.
Origin
Mid 19th century. From the genitive of Lady Amherst, the name of Sarah, Countess Amherst, wife of William Pitt Amherst, British Governor-General of India, who sent the first specimen of the bird to England in 1828 + pheasant.
