The placing of a preposition immediately before a relative or interrogative pronoun, rather than later in the clause.
- E.g. ‘To whom are you talking?’ as opposed to ‘Whom are you talking to?’..
Origin
1960s. From pied + piping, after Pied Piper, with allusion to the way in which the charmed rats closely followed the piper in the story.
