1930s; earliest use found in Notes and Queries. From Dutch kriek black cherry, beer with cherry flavour, probably from classical Latin graecum, neuter singular of graecus, probably after post-classical Latin prunum graecum, lit. ‘Greek plum’ (although this is first attested later: 1517 in a Latin–Dutch glossary).
