A kind of mangrove, Avicennia germinans (or A. nitida), of tropical America and Africa which has rough dark-coloured bark and pneumatophores rather than prop roots (also called olive mangrove); (formerly also) the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle ( rare ).
Origin
Late 17th century; earliest use found in William Dampier (1651–1715), buccaneer and explorer.
