Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Arthur Henfrey (d. 1859), botanist. From scientific Latin phyllarium from Hellenistic Greek ϕυλλάριον small leaf from ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf + -άριον, extended form of -ιον, diminutive suffix.
