More fully Alphonso mango. A small yellow or orange mango variety native to and chiefly cultivated in western India, which is highly prized for its sweet, perfumed flesh.
Origin
Early 19th century; earliest use found in James Anderson (1739–1808), agriculturist and political economist. From Portuguese alfonso, variant of afonsa, probably from the name of Alphonso(also Afonso) de Albuquerque, Portuguese explorer and ruler of Portuguese India.
