A cosmopolitan genus of small, very hairy sandflies (family Psychodidae), many of which are vectors of infectious diseases such as leishmaniasis and sandfly (phlebotomus) fever; (also phlebotomus) a sandfly of this genus.

Late 19th century. From scientific Latin Phlebotomus, genus name, alteration of Flebotomus from post-classical Latin phlebotomus (also flebotomus) lancet used for phlebotomy.
