Any of several extinct apes of the genus Sivapithecus, known from Miocene fossil remains originally found in the Siwalik Hills of South Asia, and dated to between 12.5 and 8.5 million years ago.

Origin
Early 20th century. From scientific Latin Sivapithecus, genus name from Siva (Sanskrit Śiva), the name of a Hindu god + scientific Latin -pithecus (fossil) ape, perhaps so called on account of the first finds being made close to an area significant to Hindu mythology.
