Scottish (chieflyOrkney, Shetland, and Caithness )
noun
The saithe or coalfish, Pollachius virens, in its first year.
Origin
Early 16th century; earliest use found in Dundee Burgh Court Books. Apparently from the Scandinavian etymon of sile + -ock. In Orkney and Shetland use probably from the unattested Norn cognate of the Scandinavian words listed at sile.
