Any of several tropical trees bearing nuts resembling almonds; especially the Brazil nut tree, Bertholletia excelsa, of forests on the banks of the Amazon and Rio Negro, and the Indian almond, Terminalia catappa, native to south East Asia and cultivated in parts of tropical America.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Thomasina Ross (fl. 1852). From Spanish almendrón from almendro almond tree + -ón.
