Origin
Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). Probably from French Creole petit baume, although neither of the two senses below appears to be recorded in dictionaries of French Creole or of French; however, compare French Creole (Haiti) petit baume a kind of mint, French Creole (Martinique) petit baume the plant Croton balsamiferum.
