A variety of grape grown in Burgundy; a white wine made from this grape.
Origin
Early 19th century. From French regional (Burgundy) aligoté variety of vine, variety of grape, kind of white wine made from these grapes, perhaps an (otherwise unattested) survival of a use as noun of the past participle of Old French haligoter, variant of harigoter to tear up, perhaps so called on account of its inferior quality.
